Fall Outfits
Tights can solve two fall styling problems at once: they add a visible layer under skirts and dresses, and they give an outfit texture without adding another bulky garment.
The trick is deciding whether the tights are the focal point or a supporting layer. These eight formulas cover sheer, floral, fishnet and darker legwear while keeping the rest of the outfit balanced.

Patterned, bright or high-contrast tights. Keep the skirt and shoe simpler.
Mesh, lace or subtle pattern. Repeat the texture once, not everywhere.
Solid black, cream or gray tights. Let the knit, skirt or bag carry the personality.
Let the floral pattern be the detail. A black skirt creates a clean frame while a cream, gray or pastel knit keeps the upper half soft.
This is an easy sweet-meets-dark formula. Repeat black in the shoe so the tights do not look disconnected from the outfit.
Use the sweater as one large shape and the tights as the smaller detail. Avoid adding a heavily patterned skirt between them.
Gray is softer than black and works especially well with burgundy, dusty rose, navy and cream for autumn.
If both the tights and skirt have texture, simplify the shoe. A plain loafer, boot or Mary Jane gives the eye somewhere to rest.
Keep the palette narrow: black, charcoal, cream and one accent. The sailor collar gives the upper half enough structure to balance the leg line.
If the tights are blue, pink or burgundy, treat that color as the accent. Repeat it once in a bow, bag or small knit detail instead of matching every piece.
A dress creates one continuous base while the cardigan controls the waistline. This is useful when you want warmth without breaking the outfit into too many visual sections.
A high-impact patterned tight that works best with a cleaner skirt and shoe silhouette.

Tights and hosiery can have narrower fit ranges than skirts or knits. Check the product-specific size information rather than assuming “one size” will fit every body. For colder weather, tights also are not a substitute for weather-appropriate insulation when temperatures drop significantly.
Mary Janes, loafers, ankle boots and simple platforms all work. The busier the tights, the cleaner the shoe usually should be.
You can, but keep one pattern dominant. A subtle tight with a larger plaid is easier to balance than two equally strong patterns.
Repeat black only once in the shoe or a small accessory, then keep the top half cream, blush, lavender or another soft color.
No. Fine mesh can add texture to preppy, Y2K, fairy-grunge and soft-kawaii outfits when the rest of the palette stays controlled.
Use tights when you want one continuous leg layer, socks when you want a shorter accent, and leg warmers when you want visible volume around the lower leg.
Choose focal, texture or background first. Once the role is clear, the rest of the outfit gets much easier.
